Sand Sculptures Of India

Everyone enjoys building sand castles on the seaside. These castles vary from being simple and small to large and ornate. This creative leisure time activity is enjoyed by everyone. Today, this recreation has turned beautifully innovative and metaphorical. Sand sculptures of India are an addition to the sculpture variety in India. You can find these sculptures in any shape, form or size. These types of sculptures may consist of themes like that of human, a castle, mermaid, animal, plants or fantasy. They exhibit various messages such as congratulations, global warming, stop terrorism, religious expressions, beauty and the like.
Actually, the goal behind creating sand sculptures in India is to fashion sculptures that come out as an artistic example. These sculptures saw their origin in Orissa but in the present day and age they are known and appreciated in every nook and corner of India. Sometimes, the sand sculptures are also created with various colors and thus, they turn all the more alluring and likeable.
About Sand Sculptures in India
Art of sand sculpture is not very old in India. Therefore, there are no historical evidences found about the same. It is said that history of sand sculpture in India is shrouded in the myths of Orissa. The history is said to be as old as 14th century. It mentions about the poet Balram Das who is credited to shape religious sculptures out of sand. But it doesn’t have any historical proofs. As a matter of fact, the first records of sand sculptures in India were not found to be present for the next 500 years after the mentioned myth.
Artists of Sand Sculptures in India
With the introduction to sand sculpting in India, some sand sculpting artists of great merit also came to light. Such artists include renowned sculptors like Sudarshan Patnaik, Ranjan Kumar Ganguly and Tarani Prasad Misro.
Sudarshan Patnaik has created several superb sculptures like the one memorizing tsunami victims. He carved the structure in Puri, Orissa. His works are mostly based on current world issues, ranging from climate change to world peace. He also won international awards for india at the international Sand Festivals.
Ranjan Kumar Ganguly has also carved numerous beautiful sculptures with his magic fingers.
Tarani Prasad Misro is another sand sculpture who is so far said to have created sand sculptures on religious and current issues.
Sand Festivals
To encourage this art form, Sand festivals are organized in India. An important annual event in Goa is ‘Goa Sand Art Festival’ which is organized in association with Goa Tourism. This festival takes place at Candolim beach. It is organized in the month of December for three days in weekend just before Christmas. It presents different themes to emphasize a specific subject.

Today sand sculptures of India are celebrated worldwide. Many artists are engaged in sand sculpture creation these days. These sand sculptures are exhibited in huge sizes and in multifaceted structures as well. The art of sand sculpturing is not just beautiful and convey a message but also it is environment friendly and does not have any harmful affect on environment.
